DXY Above 100: Stronger Dollar Raises External Servicing Pressure on Dollar Eurobonds

MSA market desk

Desk brief

The US Dollar Index moved above 100 on September 21 after market pricing incorporated a firmer US policy path and higher Treasury yields. Reports show the DXY trading around 100. 2–100. 4 as investors reprice dollar strength against EM currencies. A stronger dollar transmits to African credit by increasing the local-currency cost of servicing dollar‑denominated sovereign and corporate Eurobonds and by tightening dollar funding.

Dollar erosion of local revenue margins matters most for issuers with material FX‑mismatch or large upcoming external amortisation: think Ghana and Ivory Coast (cocoa‑linked receipts vs dollar coupons), Zambia and the DRC (copper export FX vs dollar debt), and large corporates with hard‑currency liabilities. For Nigeria and Angola, the effect is mixed — Angola benefits from oil receipts in dollars while Nigeria’s subsidy, refining and FX pass‑through dynamics leave the naira and fiscal accounts more exposed to imported inflation and policy risk. Local‑currency assets typically come under pressure as FX narrows investor utility; longer‑dated dollar bonds suffer via duration and a higher discount rate. Against peers, export‑heavy credits (Angola, Egypt to a lesser extent) will absorb stronger dollar receipts more easily than importers and commodity‑receipt constrained names (Kenya, Ghana). The desk watches reserve cover and FX forward curves: a prolonged DXY >100 that compresses import cover would amplify spread widening in vulnerable names.
