IMO records 119 confirmed maritime incidents in Strait of Hormuz as at 21 Oct 2026

As at 21 October 2026 the IMO's 'Middle East - Highlighted (Confirmed) incidents' register shows 119 confirmed incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz, listing multiple damaged vessels (including an October 20 attack) and at least one sinking (GFS PRIDE), with 24 seafarer fatalities recorded.

A sustained surge in confirmed attacks raises shipping risk premia: insurers may widen war-risk and P&I premiums, freight and charter rates could rise on adjusted routing and security measures, and crude export flows through Hormuz may remain volatile if ship transits fall. Those effects would feed into oil price risk and shipping-cost‑sensitive African exporters and importers, conditional on duration and further incidents.

Next IMO update to the 'Middle East - Highlighted (Confirmed) incidents' list or a UKMTO/Maritime Authority operational bulletin within 7 days.
